Engagement Rings Most of our ladies engagement rings are semi handmade made up of at least two parts the setting and the ring/shank. A brief summary of how we make engagement rings can be found below. - A jewellery design is chosen which is then made into a life sized scale model, this is sometimes done by hand or on the computer by a jewellery designer.
- A finalised master model is made using mainly silver.
- To exactly replicate the design the master model is placed between sheets of soft un-vulcanised rubber.
- The sheets of un-vulcanised rubber and model are then placed into a press which is heated to harden and vulcanise the rubber.
- When cool the rubber and model are removed from the press, the model is removed which leaves a cavity in the rubber.
- Hot wax is injected into the cavity and left to go solid after which the wax can be removed.
- The wax models are attached to a wax stand called a tree – usually with many other wax models so it ends up looking like a tree.
- The tree is covered by a metal flask to which a special plaster is added. The flask is placed in a vacuum chamber to remove all of the air from the plaster to ensure a perfect finish.
- When the plaster is ready the flask is placed into a low oven so the wax can melt away leaving a cavity for whichever metal is intended.
- The oven’s temperature is increased so the plaster is hardened and ready for the molten metal of choice. The hot flask is then removed and placed inside a centrifugal casting machine.
- In a crucible using a hot torch the metal of choice is melted and added to the hot flask, the casting machine then spins the flask at high speed which forces the metal into the cavities.
- The flask is cooled down in water and the plaster breaks away leaving the tree and castings in gold etc.
- Individual castings are removed from the tree, and are smoothed down and then sent off to be hallmarked at the Assay office.
- When the parts are returned they are mounted by our ring mounters who solder the parts together, and the diamonds are set by the diamond setters.
- Finally the ring is filed and polished which brings out the true beauty of the metal.
